FIONA McILWAINE BIGGINS found a laidback mid-winter break in Galway was just what she and her husband Richard needed...

AS WE sat sipping lattes and savouring our final view across the famous Galway Bay, my husband and I reflected on the many charms of this world-renowned corner of Ireland.

We'd been in need of a slow-down and time to smell the coffee, so Richard and I had driven down to stay at The Salthill Hotel for a winter weekend break. And this contemporary hotel, boasting a commanding location on the famous Salthill Promenade overlooking the shore, was just what the doctor ordered.

After an arduous five-hour motorway drive from our home near Ballygally, County Antrim, through rather featureless landscape and several tolls it must be said, we were warmly welcomed to this modern 161-bedroom hotel and found much-needed refreshments in the hotel's charming Blackrock Bar. The attentiveness and helpfulness of the staff was notably evident from the off and continued throughout our short stay.

The hotel proved to be a haven of peace and comfort with spacious, tastefully designed bedrooms, characterful bars and restaurants, and even a state-of-the-art fitness centre in which to unwind. However, it did lack some simple finishing touches that would have enhanced further the overall experience. Despite this, we very much enjoyed our stay. We relished just sitting back, relaxing and watching the world go by over morning coffee or an evening drink in one of the many settings around the hotel; thoughtfully created to make the most of the stunning views.
