New Passport price increase

UK passport prices are to rise a massive 25 per cent, from £51 to £66 for a standard adult, ten-year passport.

This hike for the 'epassport' is attributed to the extra security procedures involved in issuing and manufacturing of the more sophisticated passport which will now hold a biometric chip containing the holder's personal details and a photo-scan.

Additional security measures have been taken as well, with 'enhanced background checks' and face-to-face interviews for first time adult applicants - all adding to this extra cost.

However the Home Office says the newer passport will be the most secure of its kind ever.

The price for a standard adult passport will cost £66 and £91 for guaranteed one week delivery while a child's passport starts at £45 (£80 for one week delivery).

Those who require a 48 page passport will have to fork out £79 and £97 for the fast service.

If applying for your passport by post, the Passport Agency guarantees a three week processing period.

Alternatively you can use the Post Office's 'check and send' service will will ensure you've filled application forms in properly to avoid any hold-ups or your application form being returned to you.For more info, log on to www.passport.gov.uk
