TRAVEL sickness, or motion sickness is a condition that effects a large majority of the population at some time in their lives.
It is common when travelling by car, coach, ferry or even when flying.
The onset of this minor though unpleasant condition is gradual with the first symptom being lethargy accompanied by repeated yawning.
Then comes stomach symptoms - nausea, pallor, sweating, light headedness and headache.
With continued movement or motion - hence the term 'motion sickness'.
The condition of the traveller can deteriorate quite rapidly, leading eventually to vomiting.
There are over the counter tablets to help. However here are some preventive tips...
Prior to travel, try to be well organised, plan your time well and arrive at your sea port or airport in good time so that you are stress free.
If you are travelling away by car, do the same, leave your home in a calm, stress-free manner.
When you feel the symptoms coming on, or before that stage, try the following:
* Lie horizontally and keep your eyes fixed on the horizon.
* Avoid reading while travelling but try some method of distraction like games, toys and music.
* Avoid a smoky, stuffy atmosphere too and steer clear from the smell of food.
* You should also try relaxation techniques, such as breathing deeply and slowly.
* There are 'travel sickness' tablets available, you could seek advice from your pharmacist or discuss the matter with your GP.
