Airport Argues for Removal of Seats Limit

George Best Belfast City Airport has this morning put forward its case for the removal of the seats for sale limit at the airport to be replaced with a noise control cap which it claims will protect local residents by controlling the size and number of aircraft.

And the Airport argues that a planning clause relating to wasteland within its grounds is standing in the way of up to 350 jobs. The derelict land, which housed the old terminal building, has a planning restriction attached which limits the number of seats the airport can sell from the airport to two million per year.

Katy Best, the Airport's Commercial and Marketing Director said: "Currently the airport can only offer for sale two million seats from the airport in any 12-month period. Legally we can operate 48,000 flights per year but can’t fly this number due an out-dated restriction which relates to a terminal building vacated in 2001 and long since demolished.

“Almost 50 per cent of our 2.3 million passengers last year were visitors. If the seats for sale limit was removed 350 jobs could be created onsite at the airport and indirectly in the tourism industry delivering £22.4 million of economic growth for the region."

She continued: "The airport is obviously sensitive to the environment in which we operate and has a good relationship with the local community. We have worked hard to deliver on noise with only 41 complaints during 2011. Now following a significant investment we are now volunteering a noise control cap to protect them further.

“We want to assure the local community that any future development at the airport can be maintained within the planning agreement cap of 48,000 flights. The noise contour cap will limit the size and number of aircraft and will be enforceable by the Department of Environment. We are not seeking a change to our operating hours and the majority of flights will continue to arrive and depart over Belfast Lough.” The current public consultation into the modification to change the planning agreement ends on June 30.

More Flights to Edinburgh, London and Manchester

Northern Ireland’s largest airline easyJet is to introduce extra flights from Belfast International Airport on routes including Edinburgh, London and Manchester. Expansion of its Edinburgh service means that Monday flights will increase from three to four; and those on Tuesday and Wednesday from two to three. There will be three flights to Manchester on Monday, Thursday and Friday – up from the current two daily flights.

And on easyJet’s four London destinations (Gatwick, Luton, Southend and Stansted) there will be extra flights on weekday mornings and evenings, particularly aimed at business travellers. All the changes will take effect from the start of easyJet’s winter schedule on October 28.

Earlier, on October 22, the airline will launch its first service from Belfast International Airport to Birmingham. Flights for all routes are now on sale with fares from £24.99, one way including taxes. Ali Gayward, easyJet Commercial Manager, said: “Our aim has always been to make travel easy and affordable. We remain committed to Northern Ireland and we are adding these extra flights in response to increasing customer demand for easyJet services. Edinburgh and Manchester are important centres for the business community and also for leisure travellers, including people going there for our popular city breaks. We operate up to 13 flights daily from Belfast to London, significantly more than any other airline, but demand is such that the extra morning and evening flights are essential.”

The airline's recently-launched fourth route to London – London Southend – has already proved extremely popular, with a direct train link taking passengers to Liverpool Street station and the City of London in under 55 minutes. Also, easyJet is now the only airline on the Belfast-Bristol route and has increased capacity through using larger aircraft."

Uel Hoey, Business Development Director at Belfast International Airport, said: "We very much appreciate easyJet’s long-established commitment to developing its service and providing stability for millions of Northern Ireland air travellers over the years. We are delighted that the airline is again demonstrating a willingness to explore new horizons in support of Northern Ireland’s economic growth.”
